BITS AND PIECES . . . Scene readers continue to keep raving about Kojima's Sushi Bar & Cafe, the fairly new upcountry restaurant at Pukalani Square. Its menu selections range from sukiyaki to ishikarinabe (with fresh salmon and miso broth you cook at your own table). Or delight in soul-satisfying tempura udon, dynamite and baked mussels.
"Kojima's opened recently and we have eaten there twice. The food prepared by chef Kojima is exceptional by any standard," says repeat diner Lynne Gilroy. "The atmosphere is modest, though by no means unpleasant, and the menu offers a wide variety of dishes," adds Don Bernshouse.
This month's Travel + Leisure includes an article on the "Best Seafood Restaurants in the U.S.," and Mama's Fish House in Kuau made the cut to be the only Hawaii establishment featured.
"There's nothing understated or outdated about this Maui classic, est. 1973. The setting-palm trees, tide pools, white sand beach-is beyond romantic, and the fish is as fresh as it gets," states the article by author Geraldine Campbell.
"I'm so excited to be on any list with Eric Ripert of La Bernardin fame," says Mama's vice president Karen Christenson.
Another great seafood restaurant, the Waterfront in Maalaea Harbor Shops, is hooking customers with its 50 percent off kamaaina special of buy one entree and get the second one at half price. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
Fleetwood's on Front St. will host the Bikes, Blues & Bar-BQ party at 5 p.m. Friday with a buffet, beer and soft drinks for $50. It's all part of the Lahaina Second Friday town party.
So sorry to hear about the passing of Skipper Downey Smith. Many of you will remember her as the longtime hostess at the former SeaWatch Wailea. She was always spunky and good humored.
