The Maui Fire Department airlifted a Kahana dirt biker to safety Saturday afternoon after he crashed in hills above Lahainaluna High School and was incapacitated with injuries to his wrist and leg.
The 52-year-old man's injuries were not life threatening, but he couldn't move. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.
Lahaina firefighters responded to the 2:22 p.m. alarm and worked with a Kahului rescue crew and the department's Air 1 helicopter. The man was located at 3:04 p.m. and stabilized for transport.
The man was found in fallow sugar cane fields about a half-mile above the school. He'd been riding alone.
The victim was taken by helicopter to a landing zone set up at the school where American Medical Response paramedics were waiting and took him to the hospital.
