Priest from India joins Maria Lanakaila Church

A second priest from India has joined Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina.

Father Kuriakose Nadooparambil arrived recently. He follows Pastor Father Joseph Pathiyil, who has been at Maria Lanakila since August 2010.

Both priests are from the state of Kerala, India, and are members of the Missionaries of Faith Community.

The Congregation of the Missionaries of Faith was founded in Italy in 1982, and seven men were the first Indian priests to be ordained for the congregation in 1988 after their theological formation in Italy.

The congregation's mission in India was started in 1989 in the diocese of Eluru. The congregation has expanded its mission to eight dioceses in the state of Andhra Pradesh and other states in India.

Year of Faith bell-ringing planned for Thursday

At noon Thursday, Catholic churches on Maui and across the United States will take part in bell ringing to ring in the first day of the Year of Faith, according to an announcement.

The Year of Faith officially begins on Thursday - the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. In addition, it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The year will end on Nov. 24, 2013, with the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King.

During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the Catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith, the announcement said.
