1912 - Alexander Hume Ford has, once again, struck the right note. He has suggested that a road to the very summit of Haleakala would be a wise investment. The enormous expense to lay eight or so miles of road would open to popular tourist travel the most wonderful sight in the Pacific.

1937 - Registration of all pupils from grades 7 to 11 inclusive will be held at the Wailuku intermediate school on Aug. 30. Due to the addition of the 11th grade and the development of a senior high enrollment, this year will be the largest in history.

1962 - Stockholders of Haleakala Pine approved plans for the merger of Baldwin Packers and Maui Pine and the formation of Haleakala Pine in Honolulu on Monday. The merger was given approval by all parties concerned.

1987 - The Maui Tropical Plantation rolled out its welcome mat to Maui families on Saturday, mainly to fish. The main attraction was the keiki fishing derby. More than 500 youngsters crowded the edge of the pond.

2002 - The Hawaiian Burial Grounds at Honokahua Bay, a scene of controversy and angry protests 14 years ago, stood solemn and spiritual on Saturday morning for a formal Hawaiian ceremony. Aloha Festivals Maui 2002 held its investiture of Maui's new Royal Court at the Honokahua Preservations Site, which is the resting place for more than 2,000 Hawaiians.
