Discussion to focus on biomimicry

KAHULUI - Sam 'Ohukani'ohi'a Gon III and Bryony Schwan will discuss "Biomimicry: Learning from the Natural World" at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's McCoy Studio Theater.

Biomimicry is the practice of taking lessons from the natural world and applying them to the design of human technologies.

This is the third of a four-part series titled "Man/Woman and Nature: Restoring the Balance," presented by Ala Kukui/Hana Retreat and the MACC.

Gon is the senior scientist and cultural adviser at The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii. He will speak about Hawaii's ecosystems and will share traditional chants. Schwan is the executive director of the Biomimicry Institute in Montana. He will explain biomimicry and share some of the latest success stories. The discussion will be moderated by Lucienne de Naie of Maui Tomorrow Foundation.
