18-year-old chimp dies at Honolulu Zoo

August 4, 2012
The Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) - The Honolulu Zoo said one of its chimpanzees died.

The zoo says 18-year-old Kealoha - also known as Kea - died early Friday morning.

The zoo is looking into the cause of death.

Kealoha started appearing lethargic this week. He was admitted to the zoo's veterinary clinic on Tuesday but didn't respond to medication.

His parents, Roscoe and Kumi, and older brother Kibale are still living. The zoo said its staff are allowing his survivors to express their loss and display appropriate grieving behaviors.

The zoo is home to eight chimpanzees.
