Monkeypod wins design award
Peter Merriman's Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman restaurant in Wailea has been recognized for its architectural design.
The 6,100-square-foot restaurant was named Best Retail Project by the national 2012 Gold Nugget Awards. The award went to Honolulu-based Armstrong Builders and MC Architects.
The judges noted that "diverse scenes and views naturally divide the restaurant into relaxed areas that provide various dining experiences, including a social lounge, dining room, 40-foot-long bar, pub dining area, kiawe wood fired pizza bar and outdoor dining lanai."
The annual Gold Nugget Awards recognize excellence and innovation in architectural design in the 14 Western states. International projects also are eligible. The competition is co-sponsored by the national industry magazine Builder.
The Kukuiula Clubhouse and Spa on Kauai was the only other Hawaii project recognized. It received the award for Best Public/Private Recreational Use.
