Blessing of the Backpacks is Sunday
Makawao Union Church will hold its annual Blessing of the Backpacks at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
The event marks the beginning of the new school year and reminds children and youth of God's care and protection as they continue their journey in education.
Youths are urged to bring their book bags and backpacks.
The public is invited.
Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church located at 1445 Baldwin Ave., near Rainbow Park.

Kahului Jodo Mission Obon event Aug. 4
KAHULUI - Kahului Jodo Mission Obon festivities to honor family ancestors will be held the evening of Aug. 4.
Services begin at 7 p.m. with guest speaker the Rev. Yasuhiro Watanabe.
Dancing will follow.
Concession booths, which will be open beginning at 6 p.m., will offer plate lunches, chow fun, hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, picked peaches and drinks.
The temple is located at 365 Laau St., near the Maui High football field.
