Kona energy lab receives $3B grant

HONOLULU - The U.S. Commerce Department is awarding a $3 million grant to the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority to support the development of alternative energy sources and biotechnology.

The Big Island lab estimates the grant will create nearly 1,000 jobs and $1 million in private investment.

The funds will help pay for the renovation of an existing business incubator located in the authority's Kailua-Kona technology park into an alternative energy and biotechnology demonstration incubator.

The department said Tuesday the new facility will provide space for business tenants that have completed the research stage for their products, but need further technology development and demonstration prior to commercialization.
