Vacation Bible School scheduled

KAHULUI - Ala Lani United Methodist Church will be holding a Vacation Bible School program, titled "Operation Overboard: Dare to Go Deep With God" from June 4 to 8.

Deep sea voyage Bible stories will introduce children, ages 3 to 12, to people of the Old and New Testaments. Through the activities, such as creative crafts, music, water science and hands-on mission, children will learn the meaning of having "deep" faith.

The Vacation Bible School is free and offers a light supper and snacks. The school runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Ala Lani, 50 S. Papa Ave.

Festival of Shavuot events planned

KIHEI - The Festival of Shavuot, a three-fold celebration commemorating the giving of the Torah/Bible on Mount Sinai 3,300 years ago, the harvesting of wheat in Israel, and the ripening of the first fruits in the Holy Land, will be celebrated Saturday to Monday at the Beit Shalom Synagogue.

The Jewish Congregation of Maui will incorporate the final prayers of Shabbat on Saturday evening into the celebration. The final service or Minchah will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a study session in Pirkei Avot/Ethics of Our Fathers. Other events planned for the evening include candlelighting for the festival and the evening service at 7:30 p.m. A Torah study session will follow.

A morning service will be held Sunday at 9:30 a.m., which will include the famous poetic liturgy of the Akdamut.

A morning service with a Yizkor/Memorial service with recitation of the Book of Ruth will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m.
