Bears earn spot in semifinals

Seabury Hall sent to consolation bracket, Maui High bows out

HONOLULU - The Baldwin High School baseball team took an early lead and made it stand up in defeating Kamehameha Kapalama 5-3 on Wednesday in a Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I State Championship quarterfinal at Iolani.

Seabury Hall was sent to the consolation bracket of the Division II tournament after losing 12-2 in five innings to Maryknoll at Hans L'Orange Field.

Maui High lost 5-1 to Pearl City in a D-I consolation game at Les Murakami Stadium and was eliminated from the tournament.

Noah Apolo pitched a complete game for the Bears (14-1), allowing two earned runs on five hits. He struck out six batters and walked two.

Baldwin scored twice before Kamehameha batted, and added three runs in the second inning.

The Maui Interscholastic League champions will play Hilo in the semifinals today.

"Whoever made it to the state tournament, we knew they were all going to be pretty good baseball programs," said Bears coach Jon Viela.

Baldwin's Branden Kaupe was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Daul-ton Cabacungan scored twice.

Alii Pedrina had two hits for the Warriors (15-4).

Seabury Hall led 2-0 after the first inning, but Maryknoll scored once in the second and again in the third, then added four runs in the fourth and ended the game with a six-run fifth.

Ryan Nakamura had three RBIs for Maryknoll (8-8-1).

Cayde Omura had two hits for Seabury (8-2), the MIL's lone D-II representative, which will face Konawaena today for a berth in the fifth-place game.

Kristian Yap tripled and drove in three runs for Moana-lua (12-5).

Maui High finishes its season 8-8.
