Rain treat for parched Makawao

May 4, 2012
The Maui News
Lynn and Warren Liu hustle through a pouring rain Thursday morning after making a Boys Day presentation at Makawao Public Library. The couple were returning their flying carp and crafts projects to their car after treating youngsters to a look inside the annual Japanese celebration of boys. Their presentation included a retelling of a traditional Japanese folk tale, The Magic Purse, and crafts projects for keiki to make their own flying carp and color a young samurai’s happi coat. Boys Day is Saturday. The rain came as some welcome relief for drought-plagued Upcountry residents. The U.S. Geological Survey reported Thursday that Maui has had below-average rainfall for three months and below average rain for 10 of the last 12 months at Puu Kukui, which is deep in the West Maui Mountain watershed.
