HONOLULU - Brad Bowlin had 15 kills and three blocks, and Gabe Ross added 13 kills as the Baldwin High School boys volleyball team defeated Pearl City in four sets Wednesday to advance to the Division I quarterfinals of the New City Nissan State Championships.
The Bears, runners-up of the Maui Interscholastic League, rallied after losing the first set to beat the Chargers 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 in a first-round match at the Farrington gym.
Justyn Kuhaulua-Feiteira dished out 43 assists and also had six aces, Isei Finau had 11 kills, and Michael Ahn had four blocks and five kills for Baldwin (11-4), which will face second-seeded Moanalua today.
Joseph Hammond led Pearl City (11-5) with 25 kills, four blocks and five aces. The Chargers were the fifth team out of the Oahu Interscholastic Association.
MIL D-I champion King Kekaulike (14-0) will face Kalaheo (14-3) today at McKinley. The Mustangs, the OIA runners-up, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 first-round victory over Kaiser.
The eight-team Division II tournament starts today. MIL champion Seabury Hall (11-2), the No. 2 seed, will face Big Island runner-up Kohala (12-5) at Kalani.
