There has been zero coverage in Maui's media about the documented health and privacy issues surrounding smart meter technology.
More than 50 California counties and municipalities have placed moratoriums on smart meters. The World Health Organization has classified radiation emitted from wireless devices such as smart meters as carcinogens.
Yet, Maui Electric. Co. is installing smart meters and plans to have the Maui Meadows smart grid pilot project online in May (The Maui News, April 26). This project has been so cleverly green-washed that more than 100 MECO customers have volunteered to have these dangerous meters installed on their homes.
Former CIA Director James Woosley warns that smart grids are extremely vulnerable as they are tied to the Internet, thus easily taken down by terrorists and hackers.
Maui residents are gaining awareness of the many insidious aspects of this new technology. Hundreds have signed the online petition to stop smart meters in Hawaii at www.StopSmartMetersHawaii.com. We do not want smart meters in our homes, in our neighborhoods or a smart grid radiating our island.
Everyone is invited to a short film and informational meeting on smart meters from 6 to 8 p.m. May 16 at the Kihei Charter School, located at Lipoa Center on Lipoa Street in Kihei.
Please call 572-5831 to help with this meeting or any aspect of this movement.
