Canine therapeutic massage has real benefits

April 28, 2012
The Maui News

Canine therapeutic massage is not well-known on Maui but is on the Mainland and in Canada and Europe. Once I became a certified massage therapist, I exploded with joy and wanted to share this health care regimen for dogs. Skepticism clouded listeners but I persevered to let Maui's people know that canine therapeutic massage is not just a feel good benefit.

Canine therapeutic massage's ultimate goal is to increase and improve circulation, a pre-eminent physical benefit for bodily systems to function properly. My trained mind, hands and senses understand muscles, tendons and ligaments massaged correctly is prime for energizing blood and oxygen flow and to break up adhesions not seen by the naked eye and which cannot be voiced by a dog. When left alone, these issues invite aged ailments.

Restoration and preventive measures are key to canine therapeutic massage. I want the Maui community to know this.

My dogs' need for recovery from serious debilitation started my tireless search to have them be comfortable again. I cried and struggled with them.

Resources led me to the Mainland. A pioneer in animal massage whose services are requested worldwide was my mentor choice. I gave up my public relations career and became a canine therapeutic massage student.

Harmoniously keen to the instinctive senses of their bodies, my dogs were my laboratory experiments and, in time, they were released from depression, anxiety and lax muscle movements. Their renewed adventurous athleticism strengthened mine.
