Resolution seeks equitable shipping costs

HONOLULU - The House has passed a resolution protesting routinely higher retail shipping costs to Hawaii and Alaska.

Online merchants often charge higher fees to ship their goods to Hawaii or Alaska. Residents of both states are also frequently ineligible for free or discounted shipping offered as incentives for those who live on the Mainland.

The measure asks U.S. Congress to pass legislation requiring Internet retailers to offer shipping fees to Hawaii and Alaska that are comparable to those for the 48 contiguous states.

It was one of a number of resolutions passed by the House on Friday. Resolutions express the will of the Legislature, but do not carry force of law.
