Ruth M. Kanda, 88, passed away peacefully in Kailua, Oahu. She was born in Sprecklesville, Upper Camp 3, Maui. She earned a teaching degree from Eastern Oregon College of Education and taught at Lihikai Elementary School in Kahului, Maui.
Fiercely independent, Ruth was adventurous, fun-loving, practical, and very generous. She enjoyed bowling, picking ogo, spoiling her cats and dogs, Korean dramas, college football, and throwing dice at the Fremont Casino. She made tasty maki sushi, a fine Liliko'i pie, and the best shrimp tempura and fried chicken. After retiring as an educator, she lived and played in Las Vegas for over 20 years.
Aunty Ruth is survived by her brother, Tsuneyuki "Richard" Yamanishi and sister, Jennie Seno. Nieces and nephews include Cynthia Chin, Valerie Chun, Faith Kalima, Jeff Yamanishi, Bobby Tom, Pearl Tom, Patrick Kitsuki, Lynne Leisy, Jill Kitsuki, Larry Seno, Jr., Lora Ann Seno Smith and Craig A. Seno.
Her ashes will be scattered at Kanaha Beach, Maui in a private ceremony. We will remember Ruth fondly and often. We mourn her passing. We celebrate her life. She will be missed.
