People interested in locally produced food and plants and nutrition will get a chance to visit four school gardens in south and central Maui in a tour planned for this weekend.
The tour starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Kihei Elementary School garden. Participants will caravan to other points of the tour, including the Lokelani School Garden, Kihei Charter School Garden and Maui Hui Malama School Garden, where it will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
In addition to viewing the gardens, participants will learn how each school's program has dealt with challenges and successes, and how they work to influence healthy eating habits, present career choices and integrate with the regular school curriculum.
The South Maui School Garden Project also will provide a lunch made from produce harvested from the Kihei Elementary School Garden.
The Maui School Garden Network and Home Gardening Support Network are sponsoring the event. There is a $5 tour fee, which will fund a future school garden awards program.
