First photo: Consulting arborist Ernie Rezents (from left) helps Maui County environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons and Mayor Alan Arakawa plant a wiliwili tree Saturday at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. The tree replaces a wiliwili that was planted in the 1970s by Rene Sylva, the late pioneer in the preservation of Hawaiian endemic plants . That tree died several years ago in a gall wasp infestation, which claimed the lives of most of the island's wilwili trees. The gardens gave away 1,000 Hawaiian plants in honor of Arbor Day.
