October 5, 2011
The Maui News
Lee Jakewell, director of energy development and planning at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., shows sugar biproducts including sugar, molasses, ethanol and animal feed at an exhibit at the Maui Agriculture & Natural Resources Industry Day at the University of Hawaii Maui College on Sept. 23. Students enrolled in agriculture programs in Maui high schools and UH-MC programs in the county attended the event, which was presented by the Maui Economic Development Board, UH-MC Agriculture & Natural Resources Department and the Maui County Farm Bureau. Presenters included Lani Weigert of Ali’i Kula Lavender, Joylynn Paman of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and Skippy Hau of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. “This event is purposefully planned to bring students and teachers together to meet Maui’s farmers, ranchers, educators and agricultural experts,” said Warren K. Watanabe of the Farm Bureau. “Our focus is to create the pathway for agriculture students to higher education, then to meaningful, skilled and often high-paying careers in agriculture on Maui.”
