Thank-You Letters

August 28, 2011
The Maui News

I would like to thank the owners and employees of Leilani's On The Beach for their support of Maui teachers through their Educator of the Month program.

I've had the honor to be voted Staff of the Month by Lahaina Intermediate School students for five years in a row as part of our Renaissance: Partners in Living and Learning program.

For more than five years, we have been treated to fantastic meals served by wonderful people in a beautiful setting at Whaler's Village in Kaanapali.

Lokelani Ohana's dream to create housing for people with developmental disabilities is moving toward reality as we kick off our $1.6 million capital campaign.

Founded in 2006, we are the first Camphill-inspired initiative in Hawaii. The Camphill movement includes 100-plus independent communities in more than 20 countries on four continents. It is our model as we strive to create housing and socially therapeutic programs within our Maui community.

Lokelani Ohana raised some $32,000 with a June 4 benefit concert featuring legendary performer Kris Kristofferson at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Kris and his wife, Lisa, were generous with their time and support for our cause.

There were so many others that made the concert a success. They include Mayor Alan Arakawa and his wife, Ann; kumu hula Hokulani Holt and Pau'u O Hi'iaka; Na Wai Lani; the Lokelani Ohana hula halau; Bad Kitty; Patinee Sukhaneya and her friends; silent auction supporters Tina Draper and Marie Thomas; Candy Croteau and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center staff; Tony and Chris Leone; and the staff and volunteers of Lokelani Ohana.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and we look forward to building this special community with you.

Christina Chang

President, Lokelani Ohana Board

Many ministers at Maui Community Correctional Center have gone the extra mile to serve proper care and fulfill the faith-given roles. Pastor Mark Dung and Sharon Barclay have donated their time and care as they lead. Our residents appreciate these leaders as well as all churches.

The Japan-Hawaii Goodwill Baseball Series started in the early 1950s, with an agreement between the 442nd Regiment and Japan to travel to each other's countries every four years to play each other.

The purpose of the series was to help the mending process between the two countries after the war. It is a tradition that has strengthened over the past 50-plus years. This year's series was extra rewarding in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that recently devastated Japan; it was nice to show the visiting Japanese the aloha spirit and have them enjoy our beautiful island and its people.

Special thanks to the following businesses and people for their generous donations and hard work in enabling this event to be a success: Zippy's; Aloha Poi - Lester and Diane Nakama; Olowalu Store; Roberts Bus Tour - Myles Inokuma and Roy Cordeiro; Dani's and Takamiya Market - Dave Takamiya; Toguchi Body & Fender; Ale House - James and Stacy Sundin; Lahaina Coffee - Lanny Tihada; Team Pono - Shane Dudoit; All Pono - Jon and Maile Viela; Maui Beach Hotel - Cheryl Dicenzo; Elaine's Cookies; County of Maui - Ipo Mossman and Brianne Savage; Joe Balangitao; Bill Frampton; the umpires; field and press box crew; host families; and Baldwin coaching staff.

Mahalo to the Maui Police Department for partnering with Maui public schools and conducting an outstanding safety workshop at the start of the school year for school security attendants. Also in attendance were head custodians, educational assistants and other school personnel with the shared goal of keeping our schools and children safe.

Sgts. Anthony Krau and Lawrence Pagaduan, and School Resource Officers Mike Victorine, Ned Kanekoa and James Terry presented a thorough training in traffic control and lockdown drills. Attendees learned about the latest trends on drugs and gangs, the widespread use of social networking sites and cyberbullying.

These officers are to be commended for their professionalism and dedication to our community by providing this invaluable training for a safer learning environment. Sincerest mahalo . . . job well done!
