Whether you bring your keiki in for a made-on-Maui ice cream or leave them at home for an evening of dinner and dancing, the Village Cafe & Sweet Shoppe is filling the void in Kapalua.

"Comfort food and a casual ambience have arrived in the Kapalua resort area," says associate David Hanley, who helps out owners Stuart and Debbie Katz. "The Village Cafe offers a relaxed setting with lots of seating and amazing ocean and mountain views."

The restaurant opened in December in the former Vino's and Kapalua Cafe location on Office Road above Sansei and the Honolua Store.

Walk in the door and you'll find a busy structure housing the Kapalua Adventure Center zipline, logo shop, real estate office and registration and activities desk for the Kapalua Villas rentals.

Dessert lovers will find it also houses a full-service sweet shop with 12 flavors of Roselani ice cream and a German baker in house. His name is Randy Posenhauer, and he tempts those craving something sweet with cranberry scones, cinnamon swirls, blueberry cupcakes, mango bread and chocolate and coconut macaroons.

It's hard to miss these features as they're at the entrance to the expansive restaurant. You'll also find a full bar, coffee and cappuccino counter, and cushy couches and chairs for lounging, flat-screen TVs, a private dining room and indoor and outdoor seating topping it off.

"We do breakfast and lunch all day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., so that means you can get a burger in the morning and then an omelette in the afternoon."

This summer, you'll find a slew of activities for the whole family. Saturdays, enjoy free hula followed by the Hawaiian bar out on the patio. Keiki will enjoy Hawaiian storybook telling throughout the week.

"Adult fun stuff includes afternoon tea from 2 to 4 p.m. and dinner and dancing Tuesdays starting at 6:30 p.m.," says Hanley. "This place is full of couples and seniors. It's turned out to be quite successful. People love to come for an early night out and have a nice dinner at a good price and a nice bottle of wine."

"Our most popular promotion continues to be the early bird special from 4 to 6 p.m. for $22.95, adults. Monday is beach barbecue party, Tuesday is Italian, Wednesday you get a taste of New Orleans, Thursday it's Southern night and so on. For more details or reservations, call 665-1122 or visit www.villagecafeandsweetshoppe.com."
