Yom Hazikaron program Monday

WAILUKU - The Jewish Congregation of Maui will observe Yom Hazikaron, or Israeli Veterans Memorial Day, at 6 p.m. Monday.

The program includes a memorial service for the men and women who've died defending the Middle East country and spiritual home for Jews.

A Yom Ha'atzma'ut celebration will follow the service, which also marks Israel's independence since May of 1948.

A high-ranking Israeli official told Magnum photographer Robert Capa in the book "Israel 50 Years":

"By any logic, the creation of the state of Israel was not possible. It was born through a will stronger than reason, and grew through suffering greater than human beings are expected to support," according to an announcement of the service.

Organizers invite residents and visitors to join the celebration, which features Israeli music and $3 falafel sandwiches.

The Jewish Congregation of Maui is at 634 Alulike St. in north Kihei.
