National Day of Prayer event set

WAILUKU - The Wailuku Door of Faith Church will mark the National Day of Prayer with an event from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at Kaahumanu Church.

The event will include the reading of a proclamation from Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

The Kaahumanu Church is at the corner of Main and High streets in Wailuku.

Auction, dinner to benefit China trip

KIHEI - A silent auction and taco dinner will be held to raise funds for Calvary Chapel South Maui's mission trip to China.

The fundraiser will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at Calvary Chapel, which is located in the Maui Lu Longhouse, at 575 S. Kihei Road.

The mission to China is planned for June. Participants will work with a government-run orphanage and speak with university students about Jesus Christ.

Yom Hashoah to be observed Sunday

KIHEI - Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, will be observed Sunday at the Jewish Congregation of Maui beginning at 6:30 p.m.

On Yom Hashoah, Jews remember the 6 million men, women and children who were killed by the Nazi's in Germany during World War II in a plan to rid the world of Jews. This day is dedicated annually to recalling the Holocaust and remembering the deeds of resistance and heroism.

In the observance, six candles will be lit for the 6 million Jews who were killed, and tales of victims and survivors and stories of heroism will be read.

The film "Echoes That Remain," a view of the Shtetl Years narrated by Martin Landau and Miriam Margolyes, also will be shown.
