Last Friday during lunch, the ocean was causing quite a stir with the tourists at Kimo's after the tsunami. The reef was exposed, then it wasn't. This awesome spectacle of nature repeated itself over and over again and it was easy to see it from Kimo's perch on Front Street.
"There are some wicked tides out there right now," said Jack Starr, the assistant general manager who's been with Kimo's for 30 years. "I've never seen anything like it. We are very fortunate that we didn't sustain any damage, yet our lanai hangs right over the ocean."
For St. Patrick's Day today, Maui eyes will be smilin' with Irish lunch and dinner specials for $12.95 and $21.95 respectively, while they last.

"We'll braise corned beef and cabbage and serve it with herb-roasted red potatoes, and garnish it with whole-grain mustard," says Starr. "Our dessert special will be Kimo's famous Hula Pie with a green twist - mint chocolate-chip ice cream - for $6.95."
Drink specials will include $2.50 green beer, $5 Guinness and $3.50 green margaritas.
In addition, Friday, March 25, will mark Kimo's 34th year in business on Maui. Now, that's quite a feat in this volatile restaurant market.
"We'll be presenting a little party from 3 to 5 p.m. and the public is welcome," says Starr. "The 1810 Band will play and some of the proceeds will go to our Legacy Of Aloha program. Then, later that evening, Willie K will perform from 9 to 11 p.m."
Willie K will also perform from 3 to 5 p.m. (which is happy hour) this Sunday and March 27 as well as Friday, March 24. The Friday shows charge $5 cover.
"He sits under the monkeypod tree right on the lanai and plays with Jerry Byers," says Starr. "Our happy hour food and drink specials are legendary. We've got everything from sashimi to smoked marlin to mu shoo kalua pork."
Starr goes on to say that the staff at Kimo's is what keeps it going strong. "We've got really great people like Laura Blears, who's been inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame. We also have a great location and great value. Caesar salads and starch are both included in the meals. No a la carte here. We consider ourselves a fish house that also serves great steaks."
