KIHEI - Post 3850 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold its annual community recognition luau and fundraiser Saturday.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a no-host bar. Luau will be served at 6 p.m. Dinner costs $20, with entertainment.
The organization will also present certificates to a number of honorees, including Maui police officer Trinidad Alconcel, firefighter Troy Kapono Stupplebeen, lifeguard Mary "Nani" Wolfson and medic Doug Vangroenwout. Winners of the VFW Voice of Democracy essay contest and the VFW Patriots Pen essay contest will be announced. Cadet and Commander Sammy Parrella of the Kihei Civil Air Patrol squadron will receive recognition and a medal, and Evelyn Zayas of Kihei Charter High School will be recognized for her work with youth.
Tickets are available from VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members, or can be reserved by calling 268-9172. The VFW hall is at 1136 Uluniu Road in Kihei.
