WAILUKU - An Upcountry service commemorating King Lunalilo on Jan. 30 will kick off eight Ali'i Sunday services this year.
Lay minister James A'arona said he will speak on Matthew and the Beatitudes at the 3 p.m. worship at Haleakala Church on Kula Highway at Cross Road in Keokea.
He advised those attending to bring sweaters or jackets and chairs to the historic church without a roof, which holds services at 3 p.m. on the last Sunday of each month. For more information, call A'arona at 281-9289.
Members of three Hawaiian societies - 'Ahahui Ka'ahumanu, Hale O Na Ali'i and Royal Order of Kamehameha - will wear regalia associated with their respective groups and will stage a half-hour before services.
Sunday worship also commemorates the birthdays of the following alii, or royalty:
Queen Ka'ahumanu, 9 a.m. March 20, Ka'ahumanu Church.
Prince Kuhio, 11 a.m. March 27, Paia Hawaiian Protestant Church.
Kamehameha the Great, 8:30 a.m. June 5, starting with hookupu, or offerings, at the Royal Tombs at Waine'e on the grounds of Waiola Church, Lahaina.
Queen Lili'uokalani, Sept. 4; time and site to be announced.
King Kalakaua, 9 a.m. Nov. 13, Olowalu Lanakila Church.
King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, Nov. 27; time and site to be announced.
King Kamehameha V, 9 a.m. Dec. 11, Ka'ahumanu Church.
