Two kahili to be blessed

November 26, 2010
The Maui News

LAHAINA - Two red-and-gold kahili will be blessed and installed Sunday at Holy Innocents Church on Front Street in Lahaina.

The Hawaiian feather standards will be a featured part of services beginning at 10 a.m. Church members fashioned the kahili after several workshops led by Kalele Mahoe.

The kahili were given to the church by Elizabeth Cheno-weth in memory of her husband, Dave Chenoweth, and by Edna Farden Bekeart in memory of the Farden family.

The Hawaiian service is expected to be attended by several Hawaiian royal societies to mark and commemorate the Feast of Holy Sovereigns King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma. The societies include the Royal Order of Kamehameha, Na Wahine O Kamehameha, Aha Hui Ka'ahumanu, Hale O Na Ali'i and Halau O Lili'uokalani.

The service, the only one to be held at the church on Sunday, will be followed by a reception on the oceanfront rectory lawn.
