Consul general of Israel set to speak

KIHEI - The Jewish Congregation of Maui will host Jacob Dayan, consul general of Israel to Los Angeles, at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6.

He will brief congregation members on current affairs in Israel and the Middle East, followed by a question-and-answer period.

Dayan assumed the position of consult general of Israel in October 2007. In his role, he is senior representative of the state of Israel in the southwestern United States.

Prior to his Los Angeles post, Dayan served as a political adviser at the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C. In that position, he was responsible for policy coordination with the State Department and the National Security Council.

Earlier the same day, the congregation will hold a musical Shabbat. Congregation members will enter the Holy Shabbat at 5:30 p.m. with singing and chanting accompanied by instruments. (Members who are proficient on a musical instrument are invited to bring it.)

Valley Isle slated to host guest speaker

WAILUKU - The executive director of the California Southern Baptist Convention will be the guest speaker at Sunday's services for Valley Isle Fellowship.

Fermin Whittaker will speak at the 8 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. services in the Wailuku Elementary School cafeteria.

Whittaker is a native of the Republic of Panama. According to a news release from Valley Isle Fellowship, he holds a bachelor of arts degree from California Baptist University and an honorary doctor of divinity degree.

He served as a pastor in the Los Angeles area and as a Southern Baptist home missionary in California while taking a leadership position with the Home Mission Board of the California Southern Baptist Convention.
