Lahaina O-bon service, dance set
LAHAINA - Lahaina Hongwanji will hold its annual O-bon service and dance today and Saturday, beginning with a service at 6 p.m. and traditional dancing from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Food items available for purchase will include teriyaki plate, a variety of sushi, shave ice and drinks. Craft items also will be sold. Games will be available for children.
The temple is at 551 Wainee St.

Saturday service to honor St. Honen
LAHAINA - Members of the Kahului, Wailuku and Lahaina Jodo Missions will celebrate the grand memorial service of their founder, St. Honen (1133-1212), at the Lahaina Jodo Mission on Saturday.
Archbishop Kisho Yagi, of the Grand Headquarters Zojoji Temple, will officiate at the service at 5:30 p.m.
Yagi will lead 120 Jodo Shu followers, who also will visit and observe services at the Kahului and Wailuku Jodo Missions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
St. Honen teaches the practice of nembutsu (chanting Amida Buddha's name) with an utterly sincere mind in order to be born into the Pure Land (Jodo).
Jodo Shu, or the Pure Land sect, has 5 million followers worldwide with temples in Japan, the United States, Brazil, Australia and France.

Kirsten Melrose to perform Saturday
KULA - Musician Kirsten Melrose will give a concert at Waipuna Chapel this weekend.
Melrose will perform songs from her new CD, "The Coming Glory," at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the church, which is located at 17 Omaopio Road in Kula.
Melrose is a Seabury Hall graduate.

'Spiritual Forum' Wednesday
WAILUKU - The Rev. Roma Carlisle will coordinate a "Spiritual Forum" from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Unity Church of Maui, 483 S. High St.
There will be music and time for sharing on the evening's theme: "Your Relationship With the Divine."

KULA - St. John's Episcopal Church will provide a free fellowship meal from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today.
