Wailuku O-bon festival June 18
WAILUKU - The Wailuku Jodo Mission will stage its annual O-bon festival June 18.
A service to offer prayers to Hatsubon (first O-bon) persons, beloved ones, ancestors and all departed souls will be held at 7 p.m. The resident minister, the Rev. John Hara, will officiate at the service with the assistance of the Revs. Gensho Hara of Lahaina and Mitsuaki Kozu, former resident minister of Wailuku Jodo Mission.
Following the service, a bon dance will feature live music and a Maui Taiko performance. Food concessions also will be available.
The mission is at 67 Central Ave.

Bible Institute director to speak
KAHULUI - Clive Cowell, executive director of the Bible Institute of Hawaii, will be the guest speaker Sunday at Kahului Baptist Church.
Cowell will speak on "What's Important to You and Why?" at 10:15 a.m. at the church located at 309 Puunene Ave. His sermon will be taken from Jeremiah 9:23-24, with an emphasis on God's gifts to us and why we use or don't use them.
Cowell attended Multnomah University and has a master's degree in biblical studies. He twice has won the Seminary Christian Service Award. Originally from England, Cowell and his wife, Maya, attend Hawaii Kai Baptist Church on Oahu.
He is a lecturer for the institute and has been a missionary to Japan, Thailand and the Philippines.

Ceremony to be held Saturday
KAHULUI - An inauguration and blessing ceremony for the newly renovated Kahului Seventh-day Adventist Church will be held Saturday.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and praise service will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by an inauguration worship service at 11 a.m. A special potluck luncheon will celebrate "the great things the Lord has done."
The renovation project included enlarging the church sanctuary, changing the location of the pulpit, expanding the fellowship hall, and adding a new wing to accommodate the pastor's office and provide additional meeting rooms.
The church is at 261 S. Puunene Ave., but its entrance is off Wakea Avenue.
