KIHEI - The Jewish Congregation of Maui will celebrate Lag Ba'Omer beginning at 6:15 p.m. Sunday at the synagogue at 634 Alulike St.
The holiday commemorates the end of a 33-day plague in the time of exodus from Egypt. During the period of mourning for at least 24,000 lives lost in the plague, men don't cut their hair or shave, and weddings are not performed. Then, on Lag Ba'Omer, 3-year-old boys often get their first haircut and many Jewish weddings take place.
The congregation will mark the holiday at the synagogue with a bonfire, potluck dinner, singing and dancing.
For more information, call the congregation at 874-5397 or go online to www.mauijews.org.
