Holy Week services set

Ala Lani United Methodist Church

KAHULUI - Ala Lani United Methodist Church will celebrate Easter beginning with a 10 a.m. Palm Sunday service. A potluck lunch and a pinata for children will follow.

On Maundy Thursday, a service will start at 7 p.m. with stripping of the altar and foot washing.

The church's Easter sunrise service will be held outside at 6:30 a.m. April 4, with a brunch to follow. The Tongan choir will sing, and there will be other special music featured during the 10 a.m. Easter service.

An egg hunt for young children will follow the Easter celebration.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church

KAHULUI - Emmanuel Lutheran Church will begin its Holy Week observance with Palm Sunday services at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday in Kahului and 5 p.m. in Lahaina.

Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services each will be held at 7 p.m. at the church in Kahului. Holy Week will culminate with an Easter sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. in Kahului, followed by an Easter breakfast. Other Easter services are set for 10 a.m. in Kahului and at 5 p.m. in Lahaina.

Good Shepherd Episcopal Church

WAILUKU - Good Shepherd Episcopal Church has announced its schedule for Holy Week and Easter services.

Palm Sunday will begin with the liturgy and Blessing of the Palms in the church courtyard, followed by a processional into the church at 8:30 a.m.

Maundy Thursday will be observed with a 7 p.m. service and music by the senior choir.

Good Friday will have two services, at noon and 7 p.m.

The Great Vigil of Easter will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday.

On Easter Sunday, April 4, the Festival Eucharist will begin at 8:30 a.m. Participants should come early for seating. An Easter egg hunt will follow on the church grounds, along with a potluck brunch after the service. Holy Baptism and Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m.

Kahului Union Church

KAHULUI - Kahului Union Church will hold a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m., and its Easter Sunday service at 9 a.m. in the courtyard.

Pastor Dexter Teruya will be deliver the message on the theme, "In Christ Alone My Hope Is Found." Music will feature a string ensemble led by Iolani Yamashiro, Gay and Randy Hongo with the hula ministry and ukulele choir, plus Japanese and family choirs.

A brunch, Easter egg hunt and other activities for children will follow the Easter service.

Keawala'i Congregational Church

MAKENA - To mark Palm Sunday at Keawala'i Congregational Church, members and friends are invited to wear hats woven of lauhala, or pandanus, and adorned with lei of feathers, flowers or other materials at the 7:30 and 10:30 a.m. services Sunday.

The church's Easter Week services will begin at 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday with a Tenebrae service.

Easter Sunday sunrise services will begin at 7:30 a.m. outdoors with sharing of the Lord's Supper and a floral cross. Worshippers are asked to bring single-stem flowers and lei for the cross.

They also are asked to bring canned and nonperishable foods for the Outreach Committee's Maui Food Bank campaign.

Na Leo Nahenahe choir under the direction of Stephen Haines will sing, and George Kahumoku Jr. will sing and play.

There will be seating available for 800 people at the outdoor services.

Kihei Lutheran Church

KIHEI - On Palm Sunday, Kihei Lutheran Church will usher in Holy Week with worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Each service will include a procession with palms and Holy Communion.

On both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday next week, the congregation will share services with Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea, starting at 7 p.m.

The Maundy Thursday service will be held at Trinity by the Sea at 100 Kulanihakoi St. and will include foot washing and Holy Communion. The Good Friday service will take place at Kihei Lutheran, and it will include readings of Christ's Passion and the extinguishing of candles.

On Easter morning, which is on April 4, the resurrection of Christ will be celebrated at Kihei Lutheran Church through services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Both services will include Holy Communion, along with worship with the congregation's choir and hula group.

Between services, starting at 9:15 a.m., there will be a Keiki Resurrection Celebration, with a congregational luau/potluck lunch to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Kihei Lutheran Church is on the corner of Piilani Highway and Moi Place.

Makawao Union Church

MAKAWAO - Makawao Union Church has announced its schedule for Holy Week.

"Procession of the Keiki" will be Sunday at the 10:30 a.m. worship service.

Holy Thursday service will be Thursday at 6 p.m. to commemorate the Last Supper and Jesus' passion.

Easter will include a light breakfast in the community hall from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. April 4, with hot-cross buns, fruit and drinks; worship service will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Sunday School and nursery care provided.

A traditional Easter Egg hunt will begin after the service.

Maria Lanakila Church, Sacred Hearts Mission

LAHAINA - Holy Week and Easter Sunday will be observed at Maria Lanakila Church with the following events:

7 p.m. Mass of the Lord's Supper, followed by solemn Adoration on Holy Thursday. Night prayer also will be recited at 10 p.m.

9 a.m. morning prayer on Good Friday, followed by liturgies at 3 and 7 p.m.

Easter vigil outside the church at 8 p.m. April 3. There will be no morning or 5:30 p.m. Masses.

Easter Sunday Masses are set for 7, 9 and 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. April 4, with a Spanish Mass at 7 p.m.

At Sacred Hearts Mission in Kapalua, Holy Thursday Spanish Mass will begin at 6 p.m. Good Friday liturgy will be held at 3 p.m., followed by a Spanish Good Friday liturgy at 6 p.m. Easter Sunday Masses will be held at 7 and 9 a.m.

St. John's Episcopal Church

KULA - St. John's Episcopal Church has announced its Lent and Easter Sunday service schedule.

Events include:

Sunday: Palm Sunday service at 9:30 a.m. at Keokea Park with the Kula Catholic Community.

Monday: from 8:30 to 11 a.m., prayer and meditation at the church, followed by quiet time

Tuesday: from 8:30 to 11 a.m., prayer and meditation at the church, followed by quiet time

Wednesday: a healing Eucharist at 8:30 a.m. at the church, followed by quiet time until 11 a.m.

Thursday: 6 p.m. Maundy Thursday, a soup supper, foot washing and stripping of the altar, followed by an all-night vigil.

Friday: beginning at noon, meditations in the church. Children will have a separate program, featuring egg coloring. Each child needs to bring a dozen hard-boiled eggs. Donations of eggs by church members would be appreciated. Volunteers for egg coloring also are needed. To help, call 878-1485 or 281-1467.

April 3: beginning at 9 a.m., congregation members are asked to bring greens and cut flowers to decorate the church. For more information, call 878-6531.

April 4: The first Easter Sunday service will be held at 6:30 a.m., with breakfast at 8 a.m. A second service will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by an Easter egg hunt, Easter hat contest and pancake race. Children 12 and younger should bring an empty basket, offering box and a flower. Prizes will be awarded.

Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea

KIHEI - Trinity Episcopal Church by the Sea will mark Palm Sunday this Sunday with a 9 a.m. Holy Eucharist service, procession and blessing of palm leaves.

Other Easter services will include:

Holy Communion with washing of feet at 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday.

Stations of the Cross with adoration of the cross and Holy Communion, noon Good Friday.

Stringing of lei, 10 a.m., and Great Vigil of Easter with lighting of the Easter fire and Paschal candle, chanting of the Exultet, blessing of baptismal water and Holy Communion, 7 p.m., Holy Saturday.

Easter service with Holy Eucharist, 9 a.m.

Valley Isle Fellowship

WAIKAPU - Valley Isle Fellowship will hold Easter services at 8:30 a.m. April 4 at Maui Tropical Plantation.

The church's signing group will make a presentation, and the youth band, Remnant, will play.

After services, activities for children and youth - including a bouncy castle, games and shave ice and popcorn stands - will be provided free.

Wailuku Door of Faith Church

WAILUKU - The Wailuku Door of Faith Church will host Gospel singers, the Crandall Brothers, for free concerts in April.

The performances will be held at 7 p.m. Good Friday and at 7 nightly from April 5 to 10. There also will be performances at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. April 11.

Waipuna Chapel

KULA - From Saturday through April 2, Waipuna Chapel will hold a "self-guided, experiential spiritual journey," an Easter event featuring Jesus' last three days, similar to the Stations of the Cross.

The chapel will offer this experience "from the garden to the cross to the empty tomb" from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in the upper floor of the Waipuna Education Building.

The church will hold its Good Friday service from 7 to 8 p.m. April 2. The interactive service in the round will reflect on Jesus' activities on the day he was crucified with dramatic readings, music and Scripture teaching from Pastor Dale Gustafson.

Communion will be served, and there will be an opportunity for participants to "physically bring things that are holding back their lives from growing, to leave them behind."

The church will hold Easter services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Child care will be available for children through the 4th grade, and there will be Sunday school classes for children in the 5th to 8th grades. The church also will host an Easter egg hunt for children 8 years old and younger.
