Jewish Congregation of Maui sets candle-lighting events

KIHEI - The Jewish Congregation of Maui has released a schedule of candle-lighting events on eight successive evenings as part of its Hanukkah celebrations.

The following dates all feature candle lighting, goodie bags for children, plus activities and offerings, as noted:

* Today, 5 p.m., latkes (potato pancakes) at Beit Shalom, 634 Alulike St., Kihei.

* Saturday, 6:30 p.m., songs at Borders Books Music Movies & Cafe in Kahului.

* Sunday, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., community Hanukkah party at the Mayor Eddie Tam Memorial Center (event includes Israeli folk dancing, crafts, music and storytelling).

* Monday, 6 p.m., songs and socializing at Canoes Restaurant in Lahaina.

* Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., songs at Iao Theater in Wailuku.

* Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., potluck at a Haiku residence (for site details, call 874-5397).

* Thursday, 6 p.m., dancing, songs and socializing at a Makawao residence (for site details, call 874-5397).

* Dec. 17, 5 p.m., latkes at Beit Shalom.

The public is welcome to the free events.
