KAHULUI - Maui Community College associate professor of agriculture Ann Emmsley received the 2009 Malama I Ka Aina Award for her work stopping the spread of invasive species.
Emmsley received the award Nov. 7 at a ceremony at the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens during the Arbor Day Lawn and Garden Fair and Hawaiian Tree Giveaway.
Sixty-two of her current and former students got together to nominate her for the award. Maui Invasive Species Committee Manager Teya Penniman presented the award, and said Emmsley brings unwavering passion and information to her students and the community.
"Ann Emmsley represents the power of an individual to move others," Penniman said.
Emmsley received the award from Maui Association of Landscape Professionals (MALP) President Susi Mastroianni, Maui County Environmental Coordinator Kuhea Paracuelles and Penniman.
MALP and Maui Nui Botanical Gardens co-sponsored the Arbor Day events, including the fair and tree giveaway.
