MAKAWAO - Cowboys and cowgirls, floats, the Isle of Maui Pipe Band, classic cars, roaring Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a paniolo riding a 1,700-pound Texas longhorn steer named Mufasa.

They will be some of the highlights of the 44th annual Paniolo Parade on Saturday, according to Theresa Thompson, the event director.

The parade starts at 9 a.m. and runs from the Makawao Cemetery to the Eddie Tam Memorial Center. Roads will close at 8:45 a.m., and there will be no parking in town until after the event, Thompson said.

She recommended that people park at the Oskie Rice Arena, which will be hosting the 54th annual Makawao Rodeo. Free shuttles will be available to take people to the parade and back to the arena.

The parade's grand marshal will be 84-year-old Waimea, Hawaii, resident Jamie Dowsett, one of Hawaii's most distinguished cowboys, according to biographical material provided by parade officials.

Born and raised on Oahu, Dowsett attended Punahou School and Oregon State College, and he spent most of his vacations in Waimea and on Molokai learning the lifestyle of a Hawaiian cowboy.

He worked for the Parker Ranch on the Big Island and later on the Pu'uwa'awa'a Ranch in North Kona. Later, he moved his family to Oahu and worked on the Dillingham Ranch until he retired in 1990. He returned to Waimea in 1991.

The rodeo kicks off with a Bull Bash at 7 p.m. Friday at the Oskie Rice Arena.

Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 for children.

The rodeo continues at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission then will be $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 for children.
