Maui Robotics team ‘consistent,’ ‘lucky’
ATLANTA - It's so far, so good as Maui High School's robotics team heads into the final day of competition in the FIRST Robotics World Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
On Friday, the second day of a three-day competition, Maui High was ranked 13th out of 87 teams in its Curie Division, according to the FIRST Web site.
"We were consistent and lucky today. Out of the five matches today, we won four and lost one," said Maui High science teacher Keith Imada via cellular phone from Atlanta on Friday afternoon.
Hawaii high schools McKinley, Moanalua and Waialua are also competing and are assigned to other divisions. McKinley was ranked 10th in its Newton Division. Waialua was ranked 23rd and Moanalua was ranked 74th both in the Galileo Division.
Today is the final day of competition. Nineteen out of the 20 Maui High team members are at the event.
Imada said the students are tired and jet-lagged but happy and excited to be in the competition.
For the past two days, the students have been leaving their hotel at 7 a.m. and returning at 9:30 p.m., making for some long days, Imada added.
FIRST, or First Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a project initiated in 1989 to motivate young people in middle and high schools to be involved in science and technology.
