Hand-delivering X-rays to Oahu seems unreasonable

POSTED: June 21, 2008

I was seriously injured in a freak incident during the third week of January. My complicated double surgery required me to have all necessary services be done in Honolulu and spend a month there for professional care. My questions:

Why was my son required to take my X-rays from Maui hospital personnel under his arm and fly them over to Honolulu and personally hand them off to a professional surgeon when the doctors at Maui Memorial could not ship them to Honolulu? What would have happened to me if I hadn’t had anyone who would take on that expense and time and advocate on my behalf?

Why did Hale Makua never return a single phone call from my Honolulu surgeon as to my rehab accommodations? It would have been so much easier to get through the grueling recovery training on Maui with my family and my friends to support me.

Why did it cost me $55 to come home on Aloha Airlines once I was discharged from the hospital but it cost me $8,000 to get over there on an air ambulance because medical services were not available to me here on my Maui home? I want to emphasize, mine was a lousy broken hip, albeit complicated. You guys with serious heart problems, brain tumors, cancer, nonfunctional kidneys, etc., had best beware of the services/care available to you here at home. But, unfortunately, I’m sure you’ve already learned this the hard way.
