Lahaina resident Harold Kaniho helps students cross the street at the busy Front and Prison street intersection each school day, rain or shine. A retiree of Pioneer Mill, he was coaxed into the job by his grandchildren and the school principal about 10 years ago.
“I love people. I feel blessed by everyone I have met through the years,” he said in a news release. “Teachers tell me I am just like them because I am teaching students how to safely cross the road. I discourage the students from darting into the street and am always the first one in the street and the last person out of the street.”
“The Front and Prison street intersection is very busy, especially when school starts and ends. By having an adult school crossing guard, the school is promoting safe walking and biking practices,” said Theo Morrison, executive director of Lahaina Bypass Now.
“The crossing guard also reminds drivers that they are in a school zone, and that they need to be aware of their surroundings,” she said.
Kaniho received a $20 gift certificate from Mala Ocean Tavern for winning the award.
