WAILUKU — The Olowalu Recycling and Refuse Center will reopen today after being closed for upgrades since early March, the county Department of Environmental Management said.

The facility’s hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Residential refuse can be dropped off for free, along with green waste, used motor oil, and recyclable glass, plastics, cardboard and cleaned food cans. Tires and auto batteries will be accepted for a fee.

Olowalu is not a HI-5 redemption center for beverage containers. West Maui residents can go to the Keawe Street Redemption Center in Lahaina to redeem glass, plastic and aluminum containers.

Improvements to the Olowalu site include new paving, concrete pads for the roll-off containers, safety rails and educational signs.

“The upgrades improve the safety conditions of the site, and we’re very happy that West Maui residents can return to using a recycling and refuse center in their area,” said Mayor Charmaine Tavares.

For information on the recycling center, call 270-7875. For information on recycling, go to www.mauicounty.gov/recycle or call 270-7880.

Now if only they will reopen the one in Kihei. It's been closed forever for grading work.
