Farmers, Trojans, Sabers reach state baseball semifinals

POSTED: May 8, 2008

HONOLULU — Both of the Maui Interscholastic League’s Division II representatives at the Wally Yonamine Foundation State Baseball Championships — Molokai High School and St. Anthony — won their quarterfinal games on Thursday, and Maui High advanced to the Division I semifinals.

Molokai got 11 strikeouts from Kaden Tabil in a 13-3, six-inning win over Honokaa at Central Oahu Regional Park, and St. Anthony defeated Maryknoll 9-1, with Michael Jahns and Joshua Hansen combining on a two-hitter.

Jacob Babauta pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief for Maui High in a 6-3 victory over Kamehameha Hawaii at Les Murakami Stadium.

The fourth-seeded Sabers (14-3) will face top-seeded Punahou on Friday at 4:30 p.m. for a berth in the D-I championship game. Punahou beat Roosevelt 9-8 on Thursday.

Molokai (8-7) will play top-seeded Kauai on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Kauai beat Kohala 10-0 in six innings Thursday, with David Jordan Buster and Braden Balocan combining on a no-hitter.

St. Anthony (12-2), the No. 2 seed, will face Kalaheo on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Kalaheo beat third-seeded Waipahu 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

Babauta allowed three hits, with no walks and three strikeouts, in the Sabers’ win.

He entered the game after Russell Kackley drove in two runs for the Warriors (10-4-1) with a ground-rule double off Mitch Crim. After allowing a walk, Babauta got two infield popouts to end the inning.

Babauta gave up a double to Blake Amaral to start the bottom of the fifth, then retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced, allowing only a bunt single in that stretch.

‘‘He kind of shut them down. … He’s been doing that all year,’’ Maui High coach Lee Yonamine said of Babauta.

The Sabers took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the fourth, helped by a pair of wild pitches by Amaral. With one out, Tevan Devera singled, and went to third on a base hit by the next batter, Crim, then scored on a wild pitch that sent Crim to second base. Josh Gascon walked, and another wild pitch put runners on second and third before Jordan Inamasu’s sacrifice fly.

The Sabers allowed a run in the first, on an RBI double by Kackley, then tied the score on Jordon Jim-Keene’s RBI triple in the second.

Maui High took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third. Crim led off with a double and later scored on a double steal with Inamasu, who had been hit by a pitch. Justin Fontanilla singled, advancing Inamasu to third and prompting Kamehameha coach Andy Correa to bring in Amaral to pitch for Kulani Soares. Fontanilla stole second, and an error on the play by catcher Kolten Wong brought Inamasu home.

‘‘We have that kind of attitude where we want to manufacture and score runs,’’ Yonamine said.

Devera hit an RBI triple in the seventh.

Crim finished 3-for-5 with two runs. Jim-Keene and Devera each had two hits.

Tabil not only provided effective pitching for the Farmers, but also had two hits, including a double. Scott Rapanot Jr. hit a bases-loaded triple in a four-run fourth inning.

Molokai went in front for good with four runs in the second. Kekaka Kamakana hit an RBI double and later scored in the inning.

‘‘Our bats are just going off right now,’’ said Farmers coach Paki Kamakana.

Kai Rawlins and Briceson Ramos each had two hits for Molokai.

The Dragons, seeded fourth, fell to 8-7.

Jahns, last year’s MIL Player of the Year, pitched four innings for St. Anthony, leaving him greater availability as the tournament continues.

‘‘That’s very valuable,’’ said Trojans coach Shane Dudoit. ‘‘He’s got 39 outs he can throw.’’

Jahns allowed a leadoff triple to Zachary Fujimoto, who later scored on a groundout. The Spartans (1-15) did not have another hit until Matthew Guzman’s sixth-inning double.

Jahns finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. He hit a two-run single and scored on an error in the third, and in the sixth, he tripled and scored on Ryan Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly.

Rodriguez finished with two RBIs. He drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first, and Buta Wilhelm-Ione’s sacrifice fly made the score 2-0. Rodriguez also singled, stole second and scored on Taylor Silva’s base hit in the fifth. An error on that play allowed Aaron Uehara to score as well.

Silva, who finished 2-for-2, hit a sacrifice fly after Uehara’s leadoff triple in the fourth.

Aronne Santos scored two runs for St. Anthony, and Jordan Kehalakai-Bermoy, who suffered a knee injury in November, was 2-for-4 in his season debut.

Maryknoll recorded its first win of the season on Wednesday, 15-0 in five-innings over Hawaii Preparatory Academy in the tournament’s first round.

In a D-I consolation game Friday at 9 a.m. at Murakami Stadium, Baldwin will face Aiea. The winner of that game will play Kailua for seventh place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
