Swimmer dies after broken neck injury

POSTED: April 29, 2008

LAHAINA — A 26-year-old Lahaina man died Sunday night after he was found along the Kaanapali shoreline, police said. He was identified as John Sumandl.

He had been swimming at Black Rock near the Sheraton Maui when his wife reported losing sight of him, said Capt. Charles Hirata, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District. After a tourist found the man along the shoreline at 6:54 p.m., medics and firefighters tried to revive him, Hirata said. He said the man was transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m.

According to an autopsy performed Monday by Dr. Anthony Manoukian, Maui County coroner’s physician, the man suffered a broken neck, Hirata said. The autopsy also found injuries indicating that the man may have struck his head while he was in the water.

My condolences and prayers go out to Johnny's family and his friends of which he had many. I met him briefly at a rehearsal for my friends' wedding at which he did a reading, and again at the wedding. In those brief encounters, I got to know his kind, genuine, and friendly nature, and the love and praise my friends have for Johnny is a testament to the good man he was. May he rest in peace.
