PUKALANI — Jason Michael Ploeger and Kristin Julie Mattern are engaged to be married in October in Neffs, Pa., near the bride-to-be’s hometown.

The couple was on Maui at Thanksgiving to celebrate their plans. They met while attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge.

He is the son of Michael and Katherine Ploeger of San Ramon, Calif., and Pukalani. He graduated from California High School in 1996; earned a bachelor of science in chemical engineering and material science at the University of California at Berkeley; then earned a doctorate in chemical engineering at MIT in 2006. He is doing postdoctoral work at Aerodyne Research Inc. in Billerica, Mass.

His fiancee is the daughter of Glen and Susan Mattern of Schnecksville. She graduated from Parkland High School, and earned a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from Princeton University in 2000 and master’s in chemical engineering practice at MIT in 2001. She is scheduled to receive her Ph.D. in chemical engineering this spring.

They plan to live in Pennsylvania.
