Napua Greig nominated for 7 Hoku awards

HONOLULU — Upcountry kumu hula Napua Greig has received seven nominations for Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, the Hawaii equivalent of the Grammy, according to an announcement by the Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts. Nominations include for female vocalist of the year, album of the year and most promising artist of the year for her breakout “Pihana” CD.
Greig also garnered a song of the year composer’s nomination for best achievement in creating a first-time recorded number, for her original “Lawakua,” written with her cousin, Kihei Nahale-a of Hawaii island.
Other Maui County nominees include the Barefoot Natives — Willy K and Eric Gilliom — with six nods, including group of the year and album of the year for their “Slack Key Circus” CD; and Molokai songbird Raiatea Helm with five nominations, including female vocalist of the year and album of the year for her “Hawaiian Blossom” CD.
