Carved, cut, refined, pressed, fitted and molded: The metal art pieces that have emerged from the Hui No‘eau through the decades are each shaped with significance. “Not Just Jewelry: History and Metal Arts Made at Kaluanui since 1922,” a new exhibition open at the Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center through May 30, tells the story behind work of past and current students and faculty, as well as a large number of objects made by Hui founder Ethel Baldwin and loaned by her granddaughter and longtime Hui supporter, Maizie Sanford. The exhibition denotes the coming of age of the Hui Metal Arts Program and Studio and is a momentous tribute to the beginnings of the Hui and its founder. Curated by metal program instructors J.B. Rea and Jaisy Halon, the show coincides with the opening of the Ginny and Art McCoy Jewelry Studio at the Hui on May 30. The Hui is located one mile below Makawao town on Baldwin Avenue.
