ART: IN VIEW
Judges Steve Brinkman (left), Bonnie Friedman and Phillip Sabado hold the top artwork in the 2009 Na Mele O Maui Art Competition. Brinkman holds a woodcut by Maui High students Lori Lee Mendoza and Rachel Yanos. Friedman holds a woodcut by Tiffany Suh, 12th grade, Baldwin High School. Sabado holds the Best of Show winner, a ceramic ‘opihi by Bridgette Ige, 10th grade, Kamehameha Schools Maui. A reception for the winners takes place today at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
Winning artwork by the young entrants in the 2009 Na Mele O Maui Student Art Competition is on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Students in grades 9 through 12 at Baldwin High School, Kamehameha Schools Maui, Lahainaluna, Maui High School, Maui Preparatory Academy and Seabury Hall submitted two- and three-demensional art based on the theme Mai Uka A Kai, mountain to sea. Steve Brinkman, Bonnie Friedman and Phillip Sabado judged the competition in which Bridgette Ige, a Kamehameha Schools Maui 10th-grader, won the $200 Best of Show award and first place in the Division II, three-dimensional art category for her ceramic ‘opihi. Winners in Division 1 / two-dimensional art are first place: Devin Galloway, Maui High, 9th grade; second place: Vy Luong, Maui High School, 10th grade; third place: Bailey Pendergrast, Lahainaluna High School, 10th grade.
