New this week “Hancock” PG-13, 1:52, now playing at Maui Mall Megaplex and Front Street Theaters. In a summer of superheroes who are characters, Will Smith plays the one with bad attitude in this new action adventure. He looks more like a street bum than a man of steel, and although he does have the superpowers to save beached whales and humans in peril, he leaves lots of collateral damage and big clean-up bills in his wake. Jason Bateman is the public relations specialist who thinks he needs a makeover; Charlize Theron co-stars as his not always understanding wife and Peter Berg directs. Will Smith is annually Mr. Independence Day Weekend at the box office, but critics are singing his praises in muted tones this time around.
