Baldwin 14, Maui High 12, halftime

August 30, 2014 - Robert Collias
Here is my story so far:

The Sabers rocketed out of the chute to take a 12-0 lead 2½ minutes into the game on two large plays.

After a 42-yard kickoff return by Soane Vaohea on the opening play of the game, Onosai Emelio burst around the left side and rambled 53 yards for a touchdown to give the Sabers a 6-0 lead just 23 seconds into the game.

The Sabers' Tavita Taumua-Uini recovered a Baldwin fumble and the Bears committed a personal foul penalty to give Maui High the ball on the Bears' 29-yards line. Two plays later, Austin Hoe found Tristan Nichols for a 29-yard touchdown pass

Maui High had a chance to extend the lead on its next possession when Alani Malafu recovered a fumble on the Sabers' 28-yard line, but the Bears' defense forced a three-and-out.

Baldwin went 51 yards in eight plays, scoring on a 5-yard run by quarterback Taje Akaka-Foster to cut the deficit to 12-7 with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

The Bears took a 14-12 lead on their next possession when Keenan Luis scampered to the end zone on a 20-yard run nine seconds into the second quarter. The 55-yard, five-play drive was kept alive on a 15-yard penalty called on the Maui High bench after an incomplete pass on third-and-6.

The penalty gave the Bears a first down on the Sabers' 20 and Luis scored on the next play.

The Sabers' Tyson Takabayashi returned the ensuing kickoff 56 yards to the Baldwin 19, but the Bears took over on downs after Kaumana Garcia sacked Hoe for a loss of 8 yards on fourth down.

Maui High drove to the Baldwin 17 late in the half, but a fumbled snap was recovered by Nohea Keahi to stop the threat with 2:39 left on the first-half clock.

After a 16-yard punt gave the Sabers the ball on the Baldwin 37 with 1:57 left on the clock, a bad snap sailed over the head of Hoe for a loss of 34 yards.

Keahi, Baldwin's standout senior linebacker, was helped off the field with an injury with 1:00 left in the half.

Baldwin 7 7 0 0–0 Maui High 12 0 0 0–0 First Quarter MH–Onosai Emelio 53 run (pass failed), 11:37. MH–Tristan Nichols 29 pass from Austin Hoe (run failed), 9:29. B–Taje Akaka-Foster 5 run (Kelii Kaiama kick), 3:54. Second Quarter B–Keenan Luis 20 run (Kaiama kick), 11:51.
