"The Imu" will be ready for 2014 MIL football season
May 2, 2014 - Robert Collias
I have watched "The Imu" — Lahainaluna's on-campus football field — rise from a muddy grass field with little grass and lots of holes to a mecca for prep action over the last few years.
Now, it is set to be fully done — seats, concessions, bathrooms, ticket booth, and glory be, a press box — in time for the 2014 football season that begins Aug. 9 for the Lunas, against Keaau. If there is a more picturesque setting to play high school football anywhere in the world, I have never seen it.
The 3,000 seats set to go in are almost more than the on-campus stadiums at King Kekaulike and Kamehameha Maui combined, btw.
Here is the start of my story from Thursday's paper:
LAHAINA - The high school football season is a little more than three months away and "The Imu" - Lahainaluna High School's on-campus football stadium - is in its final stage of completion.
The construction of 3,000 seats is currently under way, as are bathrooms, concessions, an entry building/ticket booth structure and a press box.
All is set to be done in time for the Lunas' Aug. 9 preseason opener against Keaau. At least three Maui Interscholastic League games are slated to be played at the facility, and perhaps a fourth, although the final MIL schedule will not be released until June.
