Baldwin will be back in state baseball tournament

April 12, 2014 - Robert Collias
The start of my story from the Baldwin-Maui High baseball game Friday night:

WAILUKU - The Baldwin High School baseball team will get a chance to finish some business at the Division I state tournament.

The Bears, No. 5 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser rankings, clinched the Maui Interscholastic League regular-season title with a 9-6 win over Maui High on Friday night in front of about 600 fans at Maehara Stadium.

Baldwin was seeded No. 1 in the state tournament last season on Maui, but lost in the quarterfinals.

"Everybody plays their league to get to the state tournament," Bears coach Jon Viela said. "It is a relief to get that state berth. Nonetheless, you can see there is a lot of things that we have to work on."

Baldwin (9-0) swept the three-game series with Maui High (5-3), outscoring the Sabers 23-6.
